About Govt. College Karsog

Government College Karsog, District Mandi (HP) was established in the year 1994 by the Government of Himachal Pradesh in order to fulfil the foremost objective of establishing an institution of higher educational facilities to the needy students of this remote area. Trotting on with toddling steps, the college started its journey with 187 students and the number has risen to 2336 enrolled students in the session 2022-2023. The college was accredited ‘B’ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council in 2011 and retained ‘B’ Grade in 2017. The institution is recognized by the UGC and is covered under section 2(f) and 12 (b) of UGC Act 1956.

Looking back, the college feels proud of its rich history & heritage. The picturesquely beautiful campus of Government College Karsog sprawling over more than three acres nestles in the lap of nature. It is located at the centre of lush green valley of Karsog and provides ideal aesthetic environs with spiritual serenity in the proximity of the ancient Mamleshwar Mahadev temple. Geographically, on the one hand the verdant valley of Karsog bows to the Shikari Devi peak (Height 11000 ft); at the same time it spreads down to Kao by touching the feet of Goddess Kamaksha and further descends down to Parlog, the basin of river Sutlej. It is being developed increasingly under the umbrella of Mool Mahunnag. The place has also been for long the seat of meditation of Gods and Goddesses and various eminent sages like Maharshi Bhrigu and Parshuram, etc.

It is believed that Pandavas also stayed here during their living-Incognito tenure and freed this land from the atrocities and terror of a demon King Bakasur. The demon had its dreadful terror among people and used to kill them for his food resulting into gloom and sorrow- Shog in one or other house. The great and powerful Bhima killed this demon and liberated people from their sorrows. In later times this place came to be popularly known as Karsog. Also known as Beosh region, the valley had been a territory of Suket’s domain. The famous Suket Satyagraha started from this valley in 1948.

The college is affiliated to Himachal Pradesh University and also with Sardar Patel University, Mandi, H.P. It is undoubtedly making rapid efforts to nurture the students & provide them holistic education. Besides, the post-graduate courses in English, Hindi, Political Science and various under-graduate courses are being run under the streams of Science, Arts and Commerce. The courses at undergraduate level are offered under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) introduced by Himachal Pradesh University from the academic session 2013-14. The students are given a choice to opt various subjects in Humanities like English, Hindi, Sanskrit, History, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, Public Administration, Music (I), Music (V) and Geography. The students of Science can opt for B.Sc. degree in Life Science with Botany, Zoology and Chemistry and B.Sc. Degree in Physical Sciences with Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Mathematics as options. The faculty of Commerce offers various courses in B. Com. Degree. The experienced teachers in all the subjects that have been introduced should see the college speedily attain the required critical mass of students essential for its proper growth and progress. The institution is now moving ahead with implementation of guidelines of the New Education Policy 2020.

The number of students is increasing every year because of the good infrastructural facilities, remarkable teaching standard and amiable environment of the institute where they get an opportunity of all round development. This year in order to enable IT based teaching learning the campus has been upgraded with Wi-Fi facility. Along with it, multiple classrooms have been converted into smart classrooms equipped with modern infrastructure for structured lectures.

In addition to formal education the college also provides an opportunity to students to enroll themselves in various add-on courses being run in the campus. The students also have the advantage of getting enrolled in various certificate and diploma programmes of IGNOU through its study centre which is active in the campus. The Student learning is further enhanced by giving them an opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities through various clubs and societies running in the institution. The best talent is recognized and is trained properly to represent the college in various platforms of state and national level. The college magazine ‘Kamaksha’ provides opportunities to the students to express their creative skills.

The college has infrastructural facilities that enrich the teaching-learning process and environment through well equipped laboratories, the best IT infrastructure and sports facilities. It has also a well-stocked library with spacious seating space for students to study; sufficient number of classrooms and lecture theatres; a well-furnished Seminar-cumConference Hall equipped with ultra-modern audio-visual facilities. Besides, it has its own canteen and a hostel for girls having all facilities for the students.

The institution also took part actively in co-curricular activities and unfurled the flag of success by hosting Youth Festival Group I in 2015. In addition to it, activities of Inter College Boxing Championship (state level) were also hosted by the institution w.e.f 14 November 2002 to 18 Nov. 2002. It also hosted Inter College Kho- Kho(Men) twice w.e.f 5th Dec. 2012 to 7th Dec. 2012 and 25th Sep. 2014 to 27th Sep, 2014 respectively and attained 3rd position. Moreover, the institution also hosted Inter College Volleyball Championship w.e.f 12th Oct. 2015 to 14th Oct, 2015.

The work-culture of college is in ambience with the mission statements and with the collaborative participation of everyone. The college is progressing every year towards new heights.

The college motto is “विद्ययामृतमश्नुते” means Knowledge is the Elixir of Life.

So an attempt to attain a noble character and brilliance through knowledge is the motto of our college. The emblem reflects the objectives and goal of the institution. It comprises an open book, a lighted candle, lush green trees, snow- capped mountains and the rising Sun. The open book communicates the message that the doors of higher learning are open. The lush green trees and snow covered peaks symbolize the rich ecological and cultural legacy of the region which needs to be preserved by making people aware about its importance. The lighted candle connotes destruction of ignorance and the rising sun epitomizes education as the liberating force that leads one from darkness to the light of knowledge.
